How to Add Pinterest Rich Pins to your Blog

Rich Pins are a great way to enhance your pins on Pinterest and provide their browsers with more information about your pins. There are currently 6 types of Rich Pins: app, movie, recipe, article, product and place. Making your blog posts into article Rich Pins makes them show up better in search results and means that you’ll the one being credited when it gets re-pinned.

According to Pinterest, Rich Pins are good for click through rates too – Pinners click article Rich Pins nearly twice as often as non-Rich Pins.

Below is an example of a ‘normal’ pin.

And this is a Rich Pin. Notice that it has a lot more information, including the website name and favicon at the top, it includes the post’s description and author name and the title of the article is in bold. Overall it, it looks a lot more eye-catching and professional.

Below are guides on how to add Pinterest Rich Pins to your blog for both WordPress and Blogger.

How to add Pinterest Rich Pins to WordPress

1. Install Yoast SEO Plugin.

Setting up Rich Pins on a WordPress blog is pretty simple, using the Yoast SEO plugin. If you haven’t already installed this plugin do that now.

Once installed click on SEO on the navigation bar and then Social. On the Facebook tab select the check box that says Add Open Graph meta data. This will add the necessary code to your blog posts without you having to do so manually.

2. Verify your Pin

Go to Pinterest’s Rich Pin Validator and paste in a link to one of your posts. Click Validate and you should be shown a preview of what your Pin looks like and a message saying Your Pin’s been validated!

Click on the Apply now link and in the popup make sure your domain is correct and HTML Tags is selected before pressing Apply Now again.

3. Pinterest will send you a confirmation email when your pins have been approved.

How to add Pinterest Rich Pins to Blogger

Enabling Rich Pins on Blogger is a little more complicated as it means editing the code of your template, but as long as you follow the instructions below you should be fine.

1. Enable Meta Tags

1. Go to Settings -> Search Preferences

2. Click Edit next to the description.

3. Click yes on Enable search description and enter a description about your blog. Press Save Changes.

From now on, when you write a blog post you will see a link called Search Description under Post settings. This allows you to enter an SEO-friendly description of what the post is about. If you don’t fill this in, Blogger will pull in the first few lines of the post.
2. Back up your site

Whenever you make changes to the code of your site, its always a good idea to take a backup.  Go to Template -> click on the Backup/Restore button on the top right and then Download full template.

3. Add in the code

Head back to Template and select Edit HTML. You need to search for the following (use CTRL/CMD + F to open the search bar)

Change BLOG TOPIC to the main topic of your blog (e.g. beauty, fashion)
