Erica is the owner of the blog Being Erica, which talks about her personal fashion style, travelling and her daily life living in London. We caught up with her for July’s Blogger of the Month feature.
Originally I started my blog to keep in touch with friends and family back home. I had been in London for maybe six months, and was getting pretty sick and tired of having to write the same hundred emails and have the same conversations back home (sounds awful, huh! Promise I’m not really this ungrateful!), so tried to figure out the best way to keep everyone up to date, while still being able to share my pictures and stories, and still be engaging. I had no idea back then that there was a whole world out here for the taking!
How did you build your audience?
With lots of work and dedication. For the longest time I was commenting on tons of blogs, on Instagram, I got on Twitter – this whole Online Community was brand spanking new to me, and yet before that, I’d always sort of looked down on people who spent all their time on the computer. I found myself losing track of TV shows and gave up on reading for the longest time, and instead focused all my energy on making friends, replying to comments, buying ad spaces on other blogs.
Obviously it’s all paid off as far as gaining a great audience of lovely readers who comment and give advice and who I can honestly say have help shape the current state of Being Erica. As well as that, I have made some of the bestest friends a girl could make, all through the power of the Blogosphere. There’s definitely something to be said about Online Friending you know!
How many times a week do you blog?
Well, I post six days a week, but I usually sit myself down on a Sunday night and write all the posts up (or at least edit and upload the pictures, then write in my breaks at work!) and schedule them for the week. I made a promise to myself that I would document my life – no matter how mundane I found it, so as to not take my London Life for granted.
I don’t know if my readers necessarily care about my six days a week of nonsense as much as I do, but one day I will be so grateful to myself for having kept such a fabulously accurate diary.
Is there a brand you would love to work with?
I have already worked with some of my favourite brands; New Look, Clarks, Joules and many, many more. I think the ultimate for me would be Cath Kidston or Laura Ashley – or maybe Liberty! But, I’m not here for the ‘things'; I came to the Community for different reasons, and what I take away will be more about gaining experiences rather than things.
Since I started blogging I’ve really rekindled my love of the written word and its power in the world, so I really hope that at the end of this ride there might be a new career path starting to carve itself out… (but still Cath Kidston, please!)
What is your ultimate blogging tip?
Find your voice, and write what you want to write. Don’t force it, or it will sound forced. Don’t fib it, it will sound fibbed. You are the best you there is, and as long as you have something to say, people will want to read it. Put the U in Unique (oh haaaale yes I just went there!).
